There’s no better example of this than the Mayfair Witches digital collection. Users are invited to join a vibrant community of spiritualists, witches, and all manner of powerful beings to share ideas, learn, and support each other. Access to this exclusive digital coven can be gained through the Mayfair Witches Pass, which provides a variety of member-exclusive benefits. That said, not all Mayfair Witches Passes are built equal. Some are rarer than others.. Chainlink VRF will also be employed in the future by Orange Comet to add to the many utilities of these passes and will include IRL experiences to meet the cast and visit sets.
That’s why we needed Chainlink VRF—a secure random number generator (RNG) that any user can independently audit—to help randomly decide collectibles rarities. It helps provide collectors with cryptographic (math-based) assurances that everything that should be random is actually random.
It’s difficult for things to be truly random on blockchains. RNG solutions for smart contracts require several security considerations to prevent manipulation and ensure system integrity. For instance, RNG solutions derived from blockchain data like block hashes can be exploited by miners/validators, while off-chain RNG solutions derived from off-chain APIs are opaque and don’t provide users with definitive proof about the integrity of the process.
We chose Chainlink VRF because it’s based on cutting-edge academic research, supported by a time-tested oracle network, and secured through the generation and on-chain verification of cryptographic proofs that prove the integrity of each random number supplied to smart contracts.
Chainlink VRF works by combining block data that is still unknown when the request is made with the oracle node’s pre-committed private key to generate both a random number and a cryptographic proof. The Mayfair Witches digital collection smart contract will only accept the random number input if it has a valid cryptographic proof, and the cryptographic proof can only be generated if the VRF process is tamper-proof. This provides our users with automated and verifiable assurances directly on-chain that the digital collectible reveal process is provably fair and was not tampered with by the oracle, outside entities, or the Orange Comet team.
Chainlink VRF will continue to play an important background role for the collection as member-exclusive benefits roll out. In any case where there are limited spots, even for members, Chainlink VRF helps provide undeniable proof that winners are selected in a fair and tamper-proof manner.
